If you are unfortunate enough not to have applied petroleum jelly to your skin before you colored your hair or have just has an accident with the hair color then here I will show you a number of ways to attempt to remove the stains.

Beauty Products - There are a number of beauty products on the market, available in beauty supply stores and online. If you color your hair regularly then you would be best to purchase some of this product, and keep it at hand for just after you have colored your hair.

Nail Polish Remover - This can be very affective for removing hair color stains but you should not use it excessively or too near the eyes. Try to use in an open room also because of the fumes. Use a cotton bud and apply to the area that is stained; it will fade and remove the color. Wash with a small amount of soap and warm water after to remove the nail polish remover.

Toothpaste - This is a great home remedy kit as everyone has toothpaste available. Just take a small blog on your finger tip and rub into the affected areas. Any toothpaste will do fine but the ones with abrasive ingredients/scrubbing granules is a little better. Once you rub into the skin, just wash off with a little water. Very easy to use and no fumes.

Cigarette Ashes - sounds strange but can be effective. Get a small amount of ash on a cotton bud with a small amount of water and apply to colored areas. The grainy effect of the ash helps with the removal. Wash with warm water after.

Dishwashing liquid & baking soda - Mix the two together in the palm of your hand, equal parts and then apply to the affected areas. Lemon also can be used instead of baking soda. Wash with warm water after.

Prevent stains when coloring your hair at home.

Prevent stains when coloring your hair at home.

Hair colors stain so be prepared before you start to color your own hair. When first mixing the products, the hair color and peroxide, use a mixing bowl/dish or an applicator bottle. Wear the plastic gloves provided with the kit or use your own. If you are using a bowl/dish, place an old towel underneath them in case of spills or splashes. Make sure the bowl/dish or bottle is big enough to hold both the cream hair color and the liquid peroxide. Use a brush or a plastic spoon to mix them together thoroughly, removing any lumps. If you are using an applicator bottle shake it for about a minute (with your finger over the open hole), until it looks smooth. The colors may change as you mix them.

Now get yourself prepared. Use an old shirt or an old towel that you do not mind staining. If you are going to shower to wash off the hair color, use a towel, as the shirt will have to be pulled over your head, possibly pulling off the color as you remove the shirt. Using a hair clip can secure a towel over your shoulders. Put the towel or shirt in the sink/wash basin or bath, not on the floor as it could leave stains on your carpet or floor tiles. I put them in the shower as I wash my hair, then I give them a scrub before putting in the laundry/washing machine.

So you now have your body and surrounding areas protected, let’s now prepare your skin. The best product for preventing staining while coloring your hair at home I find is petroleum jelly. The color sticks to the surface of the jelly and it is easily removed after. Take a finger and scoop out an amount and apply to your forehead, near your hair line. Apply to the top and back of your ears, and the back of the neck also along the hair line.
You are now ready to start applying.
